Don’t miss the lovely article in Mothering (January-February 2010) by Seattle’s own Clint Kelly. Entitled Dad’s Golden Hour, it is a heart-felt valentine to the joys of reading aloud to your children.
Kelly shares his journey into the “richly fulfilling role of Chief Reader for my little tribe,” while at the same time reflecting on the challenges of keeping this role going. He provides the reader with seven great pointers for keeping adult interest fresh and new while coping with a child’s inevitable request to hear the same story for the umpteenth time.
Kelly “came to understand that children take comfort in familiarity” and decided that he did not want to allow “their eagerness to be read to – by me – to dry up and blow away.” Oh, and if Kelly’s words don’t do if for you, the accompanying pictures surely will.
Here’s one more little incentive to read to your young children. The King County Library System has launched a Read to Me! program for all pre-readers, (newborn through 5-years). Stop by the library and pick up a Read to Me! flyer, read out-loud to your pre-reader for 20 minutes a day, for 20 days and bring the completed flyer back to claim a prize!
